Andean Leyends
Its EMERGENCE FROM THE COLONY:

The image of the Virgin of Socavón, was painted the 16th century, conceived on the year
1500 approximately. Don Josermo Murillo asserts that the colonizers enthrone to the
Virgin of the Candelaria between 1540 and 1550. At the founding Oruro in 1606 was by its
coronation journal, which was checked by Augustinian Religious between 1570 and
1600, which effected the cult of the Virgin of Socavón by Spanish conquistador
celebrating each February 2 in honor to the Virgin of the Candelaria.

Was revealed officially before the knowledge of all the public in 1789. However, long
before that date, the inhabitants of the once Villa San Felipe of Austria, became aware of
its existence, without the frenetic culture of our days.

Don Eduardo Ocampo Moscoso recounts that the Oruro Carnival expresses the religious
sense from a Andean religious and Catholic roots, fruit of the arrival of the Spaniards to
America. In 1987 was beginning the process of enlargement and remodeling of the
Temple of Socavon , which was inaugurated in 1991.

The following year 1992, discover the image restored by experts from the Virgen Morena
of Socavon patroness of the miners and revered by thousands of folklorists in the Oruro
Carnival. In the basement of the sanctuary are the Museum Costumbrist and
Mineralogico , as a sample of the symbiosis pagan-religious.
CREOLE VERSION OF THE appearance OF THE VIRGIN OF THE CANDELARIA (Virgin of Socavon)

relates the legend

The feature pagan religious of Oruro Carnival has its data at the time of the colony. The legend relates, that in a socavon abandoned
mine "Foot of Gallo" lived a burglar dubbed the "Chiru - Chiru", who at one of its run nights was fatally wounded by a worker who
astonished trying to steal the good of value that owned as a treasure in the trance, was led until his cave for a charitable and virginal
woman of the people. The next day, was huge the surprise of the miners in the area to find the cadaver, was found with a beautiful
image of the Virgen de La Candelaria guarding the header of the poor burglar. Some days after the miners agreed nominate, the
mine "Foot of Rooster" in hereinafter "Socavon of the Virgin".

All the years were held with great pomp the fiesta de la Virgen de La Candelaria, whose anniversary is the February 2, but because
in that time the miners alone could have three days of freedom on the occasion of carnival, agreed to match the celebration with the
Saturday of carnival.

To honor due to the Patroness of mine workers, all these will dress as devils to enhance and colorful at the party and to retain the
same time the tradition of "Tio de la Mina", without missing Satan and the Archangel San Miguel to represent the melodramatic
struggle of good against evil.

Finally, these agreements are posts in knowledge of all miners of the jurisdiction, but with the necessary anticipation, composed
songs, stories and special prayers to honor the miraculous Virgin.

LEGEND OF THE MYTHOLOGY ANDEAN OF THE URUS:

The same legend of where starts the carnival of Oruro above all in its essence edges of philosophy, portrays us the configuration of
three idols in force in the reality of local customs and manners of the town and whose sequence is presented when "Wari",el God of
evil, dominating of the Andes decide to punish to the URUS, inhabitants of this region Andean because itself repented of its sins, life
and they tried to return for the roads of good.

"Wari" Semi God of the mythology Andean, in its afan to punish to the URUS by becoming its lives toward good, I send then
unchaining its fury before the town of the Urus, a gigantic snake that appeared for the South of the population to exterminate to its
repented inhabitants; he send for the North to a gigantic Toad, by the east a true plague of Hungry ants and a monstrous Lizard, in
order to exterminating to the settlers of the region.  In that instant attending the clamor of the Urus, did its apparition a beautiful lady,
who in brave fight defeating to the fearsome one Wari.

The legend says: defeated that was Wari, seeking dwelling in it but deep of the land; in the meantime the Toad, the Snake and the
Lizard were become stone and the Ants in Sand.

The Beautiful lady, that about the Historians was the Virgin of the Socavon, I remain expressed in a beautiful image that survives to
the present to protect the miners that can to be kill of the wickedness and cunning of Wari, that today conquered and humiliated
takes care of the natural wealth in the bowels of the land.

In Principle, the presence of Wari in the mining tunnels I awake fear and distrust, but they did not delay the miners in identifying it, by
their acts and conduct, in attitude sumiza and of capsizing they incorporated it in their circular calling him "tio".  In this manner the
miner I assure the complacency of the divinity, touching him their fibers you suggest of ancient pride, achieving for the same thing,
benefit, reward in the permanent delivery of wealth of the subsoil of the ones that is absolute owner and Mister.

IMPORTANT: We recall that in the towns of the Bolivian territory, the Spaniards have been the oppressive seconds later of the Inca.
The God urus survived to the onslaughts of Aymaras, Qechuas and Spanish, that are seen reflected in our carnival of Oruro.

It is that first were the Inca who changed the name of this maiden that save to the town of the urus calling it princess to convert to
these to their religion (which mysterious disappear after of save to this town of the fury of Wari), subsequently were the Spaniards
the ones that used the same legend to convert them  to their religion and they show the virgin as the beautiful lady That the save (the
mysterious maiden saver of this town  to appear again with the arrival of the Spaniards).

The authorities in any moment of its desperation, by finding it him offered juicy rewards by its capture, but this itself toward
incomprehensible that when already

Them they favored by this t

divine of the Virgin one Maria of which was devout

As every human Being trapped by the ambi
tion he commit the sin to enter an afternoon to steal to the house of a needy family,
losing just then the protective grace, therefore I do not include the presence of the owners of house, that upon surprising it they
wounded him with a dagger and considering dead they left it in the street.

Anselmo Belarmino repented of its felon

to its den that was found very near the socavon of the mine and him assist in its
last moments of life

The settlers of the place, missed by the absence of the Nina Nina by various you gave, they proceeded to seek it and when they
found the large was its surprise since they discovered its body without life to the feet of a portrait painted of the Virgin of the
Candelaria to which the offered its devo

From that I gave and by the closes to the mine entrance of the silver deposit the locals called it the Virgin of the Socavon.
